2.9.2026-31.9.2026 | Opening 3.9.2026 klo 16:00-18:00
Maria 01 | Lapinlahdenkatu 16, 00180 Helsinki
BEGINNING is the first chapter of STATES OF CHANGE, a six-part curated exhibition series by Scope Gallery in collaboration with Maria 01, the largest startup campus in nordics.
Across six interconnected themes, the exhibition series explores change in its many forms, perspectives and interpretations, creating space for different artistic approaches to what it means for something to emerge, shift or evolve.
The exhibition explores the many forms a beginning can take, from emergence and possibility to awakening, becoming, endings, rebirth and new steps.A beginning can be personal or collective, concrete or abstract, quiet or disruptive. It can mark the birth of an idea, a sound, a movement or a form, or the moment something begins to shift into something new.
BECOMING / Sara Virolainen, 110x80cm 680€
“Becoming” by Sara Virolainen focuses on identity as an ongoing process rather than a fixed state. It also explores the beauty of incompleteness, with an idea that we do not need to be finished, resolved, or fully formed in order to hold value. The layered colors and fragmented forms suggest different possibilities existing simultaneously, reflecting the space between who we have been, who we are, and who we may still become.
WONDERLAND / Rosa Sikorski, Acrylics on canvas, 40x60cm 350€
“Wonderland” by Rosa Sikorski explores the idea of willingly letting an old version of yourself die in order to make space for something new. It explores the theme of ego death and surrender, where letting go can almost feel like destruction. It is as if losing a familiar identity would mean losing ourselves entirely. The artwork conveys the frightening feeling of letting go, but also the feeling of trust. What is falling away was never the whole us, and releasing it can create space for renewal.
PÄIVÄNPAISTE/ Antti Liimatainen, Acrylic 76x134cm 440€
Antti Liimatainen has composed “Päivänpaiste” by revisiting memories of a previous home in Vuosaari, the summer, and the sea. It is a composition of hope, beauty, and resilience. The artwork conveys the excitement of a future family and the beauty of the environment and nature, even though their life had bounds of hopelessness and insecurity. The use of gold leaves is reminiscent of the sun and its glistening.
LOVE YOURSELF / Mariia Batrakova, 50x60cm 800€
The inspiration for “Love Yourself” came to Mariia Batrakova in a dream. It is filled with sorrow, transformation and being whole. Entities, thoughts, and feelings emerge from the frame, reminding of past suffering but aiding in understanding who we were in the beginning and who we can still be. The circle represents unity, as the entities could no longer be separated. They describe colors as their weakness, passion, and freedom.
VALENSOLE LAVENDER FIELDS / Jussi-Pekka Ikonen, 55x69cm 520€
“Valensple Lavender Fields” by Jussi-Pekka Ikonen depicts the lavender fields of South-France. The process has been long and broken down into small steps in order to create something original and exciting. There is much to learn in repetition, but it is also important to leave the door open for new beginnings. The artwork represents leaving familiarity behind and stepping into something unknown, keeping an open mind despite the upcoming challenges.
Beginning Is When You Know It Is Over” / Diana Maria De La Encarnacion, Oil on canvas, 73 x 60cm 1600€
“Beginning Is When You Know It Is Over” by Diana Maria de la Encarnacion contemplates a moment, where the end of something turns into a start of something new. The artwork depicts a silent moment of separation. Two people who are still close, but already on their way to different directions. They have halted between two different realities, the one that was, and the one that is only beginning.
VIBRATION12 – MELODY ON BLUE / Youngok Kim, Acrylic on canvas 30x30cm 900€
Youngok Kim explores the moment when sound begins to take visual form in their piece “Vibration12 – Melody on Blue” . The continuous horizontal gestures suggest rhythm, resonance, and the first movement of a melody emerging from silence. For them, “Beginning” is not a fixed starting point, but a subtle transition. It is the moment when silence becomes vibration, and vibration develops into rhythm. This piece reflects that fragile beginning through layers of blue, repetition, and movement.
